Inspiration
"It's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential."
- Barack Obama
- Barack Obama
We are so lucky to be alive.
We stand upon the shoulders of giants, and from our vantage point we see that these turbulent and frightening times offer unparalleled opportunities for growth.
It is a time to be fearless, a time to embrace openness and vulnerability and failure, and a time to truly be the change we want to see in the world.
I hope you'll share in my inspiration.
Positive Deviance
In every group there are outliers whose deviant behavior makes them more successful than their peers, despite having access to the same resources and facing similar challenges. We should seek out and learn from these trailblazers, leveraging their local wisdom for global impact.
Systems Thinking
No man is an island, and systems thinking helps us to see that "there are no perfect solutions; choices we make will have impacts on other parts of the system". Cultivating our ability to understand systems as an interconnected whole helps us to effectively anticipate outcomes, minimize losses, and maximize benefits.
People First
Health care is a business, and the most successful businesses are the ones that put their people first. My core values are respect, transparency, and empathy, and I believe that "if we take care of our people, they will take care of our customers, and the customers will come back".
Failing Forward
We can't think ourselves into new ways of living; we must live ourselves into new ways of thinking. Success is not about making the perfect plan but about taking measured risks and leveraging failures toward progress. To every project I bring a bias for action and readiness to learn from mistakes.
The Ten Principles
Burning Man is many things to many people, but with certainty it's one of the most striking modern examples of community building.
Behind the Instagram eye candy, creative costuming, and nightlife culture there is an authentic and organic foundation of shared values, the Ten Principles:
Radical Inclusion
Gifting
Decommodification
Radical Self-Reliance
Radical Self-Expression
Communal Effort
Civic Responsibility
Leaving No Trace
Participation
Immediacy
What about these principles enables the spontaneous creation and dissolution of a week-long self-governing city of 80,000 strangers? And what can teams and organizations adopt from this example to drive engagement, ownership, and self-sustained growth in their own environments? People are willing to invest when they share a passion, and with clear core principles that passion can be harnessed to create something much greater than the sum of its parts. Let's help communities harness their inner power to improve their health, the health of the planet, and the health of future generations.
Buddhist Values
Self-determination, mindfulness, compassion, loving kindness, and detachment each have a place in the modern leader's repertoire. Leadership with a balance of these tenets builds trust, encourages growth, empowers independence, and creates a sustainable culture of positivity and progress.
Evidence-Based Practice
Algorithms, best practices, and foundational theories are unseen rules that guide us toward desired outcomes. Decisions should be driven by data, practice should be informed by theory, and strategy should be built upon proven successes.
Transformational Leadership
Change is not transformation, just as a better caterpillar is not a butterfly. Truly transformational leadership is built upon inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and idealized influence, and these are the leaders paving a new path toward organizational excellence.
As children, our appetites are voracious. But as we age and we learn to fear, to hedge our bets, and to shy away from failure. Innovation, however, requires that we stay hungry and stay foolish: let's embrace curiosity and "the impossible" with fervor and fearlessness.
